Summary
President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico will pursue legal measures against the United States after ICE fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican citizen, during a Tuesday operation in east Houston.
ICE said agents tried to stop Araujo's vehicle around 6:50 a.m. on Canal Street and that an officer fired in self-defense after he allegedly rammed an ICE vehicle and tried to run over an agent.
Araujo, who his family said had lived in Houston for more than 30 years, was shot in the right side, taken to Ben Taub Hospital with CPR underway and later pronounced dead; three other people were detained.
Local leaders called for an independent investigation, while Araujo's son said his father did not deserve to die and should not be reduced to a headline.
DHS's inspector general is leading the investigation as the case adds to Mexico's complaints over the treatment of its citizens in U.S. immigration enforcement.
