macOS 27 Beta 3 Adds 2 Golden Gate Wallpapers as Public Preview Nears

That requirement is tied to the way Apple is building the new Siri AI and related features in macOS 27 Golden Gate. The company is pushing more complex, real-time AI tasks onto the device for speed, privacy and offline reliability. Features such as improved Voice Mode, expressive Siri voices, advanced dictation and the highest-end on-device Siri capabilities demand more Neural Engine performance, GPU power, memory bandwidth and RAM than older M1 and M2 Macs typically offer. Apple is still bringing many Apple Intelligence features to all Apple silicon Macs, but not the top tier. On older machines, some tasks may be limited, slower, or shifted more heavily to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute rather than running fully on the Mac itself. That creates a practical split in the user experience: the newest Macs get the fastest and most private AI features, while earlier Apple silicon models get a reduced version. The result is a new hardware-based tier inside the Apple ecosystem. macOS 27 itself supports M1 and newer Macs, but the most demanding Apple Intelligence features have stricter requirements than the operating system as a whole, making M3 Macs the cutoff for Apple’s full AI experience.

Two new wallpaper and screen saver options—Golden Gate Sunset and Golden Gate Night—arrived in macOS 27 Golden Gate beta 3, marking the first visuals tied directly to the release’s Golden Gate name.
Both designs include motion on the Lock Screen when a Mac unlocks and can also run as screen savers, expanding on the existing “27” wallpaper already in the prerelease build.
macOS 27 Golden Gate remains available only as a developer beta for now, with Apple planning a public beta preview later this month.
