Apple Ships macOS Golden Gate 27 Beta 3 to Developers, Expanding OS 27 Testing

Q: Is Apple's new AI just a strategy to force millions into expensive hardware upgrades?

Not entirely, but Apple’s AI rollout clearly creates strong upgrade pressure. The key fact is that macOS Golden Gate’s headline AI features are tied to Apple silicon, and some of the most advanced tools appear to need newer chips such as M3 models with more memory. That means Intel Mac owners are effectively shut out, and even some early Apple silicon users may not get the full Siri AI experience. In that sense, the strategy does push part of Apple’s installed base toward new hardware. But the evidence does not support the idea that Apple is forcing everyone onto only the newest, most expensive Macs. Apple Intelligence support extends across a broad range of M1-and-later Macs, including machines introduced in 2020. That gives many existing Apple silicon users access without buying a 2026-era device. The company’s argument is technical as much as commercial: on-device AI depends heavily on unified memory, the Neural Engine, and Apple silicon’s ability to run models locally while preserving privacy. Apple’s design also suggests a mixed strategy rather than a pure hardware cash grab. Some AI tasks run on-device, some use Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, and some can route to outside models. That architecture is meant to balance privacy, speed, and capability, not just sell Macs. So the fairest reading is that Apple is using AI to strengthen its hardware ecosystem and accelerate the shift away from Intel, but it is not limiting the features only to brand-new flagship machines.

Build 26A5378j of macOS Golden Gate 27 Beta 3 is now available to developer beta testers through Software Update, package installer and IPSW downloads.
The release continues Apple’s work on performance and the Liquid Glass interface, adding controls for effect intensity while refining Siri’s chatbot-like app behavior, Apple Intelligence features, Mail search and Spotlight speed and accuracy.
Apple also pushed beta 3 updates across the rest of its OS 27 lineup, including iOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27 and visionOS.
A public beta is expected shortly, but Apple still positions the beta software for advanced users because of likely bugs; the final macOS Golden Gate 27 release is due this fall.
