Ric Bucher said the Lakers had effectively decided to move on from LeBron James once they acquired Luka Doncic, and later let James present the split as his own decision.
On his podcast, Bucher argued the reported sequence was crafted to preserve James' dignity, saying he would have needed a major pay cut and a reduced role to stay.
Bucher also dismissed Rich Paul's outreach to teams as "window dressing," arguing James — who turns 42 next season — no longer has the leverage or market value he once did.
ESPN, citing multiple team sources, reported a less stark version: no rift with Doncic, but a long-running disconnect between James and the organization dating to the 2021-22 season.
James told the Lakers on the first morning of free agency that he would play elsewhere, and both sides exchanged warm public statements, leaving open whether the cordial exit was managed or fully genuine.
