If Retroid does ship a dual-screen handheld with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, it looks more like a deliberate budget-performance tradeoff than a clear market misstep. The key reason is price and maturity. The 8 Gen 2 is an older 2022 flagship, but by 2026 it remains a proven Android gaming chip with stable drivers, strong thermals, and enough power for demanding emulation, including solid Switch 1, PS2, and GameCube performance. It also fits Retroid’s usual value positioning, where devices in the roughly $229 to $399 range are central to its appeal. A newer Snapdragon 8 Elite would raise costs and, despite much higher performance, still has a less mature emulator stack than the 8 Gen 2. That said, the risk is product overlap. AYN’s Thor already uses the same chip, and Retroid and AYN are closely related brands. If Retroid launches a cheaper integrated dual-screen device on the same silicon, it could undercut the Thor unless AYN moves upmarket with a Thor 2 or another 8 Elite model. In that sense, the bigger issue is portfolio strategy, not raw chip choice. There is also some uncertainty around the device itself. Reports of a 2026 Retroid dual-screen model come from a social media reply and industry speculation, while some commentary still argues no such product is firmly established. But if it arrives, using the 8 Gen 2 would likely be best understood as Retroid prioritizing affordability, battery life, and software maturity over headline specs.

That timeline has fueled speculation the machine could be a Pocket Flip 3, especially after Retroid released a Dual Screen Add-on that turns compatible handhelds into makeshift dual-screen systems.
