That captures a real part of his early life: historians note he was not born at the very top of Virginia society and did work aggressively to advance himself through surveying, military service and land acquisition. But the broader historical reality is that Washington was never an ordinary outsider. He was born into the Virginia gentry, inherited access to land, status and elite networks, became connected to Mount Vernon at a young age, and later expanded his wealth substantially through marriage and landholding. By the Revolution and especially afterward, he was a major planter with vast acreage and hundreds of enslaved people. That matters because slavery was not incidental to his rise. Historians argue that plantation wealth and the management of enslaved labor were central to Washington’s economic power and social standing. Some scholars also note that elite founders were not “bootstrap” figures in the modern sense, but members of a property-owning ruling class. So the fairest reading is that the “self-made” theme is only partly true. Washington did shape his own career, but he did so from a position of inherited privilege within a slave-based economy. If the film underplays that, it leans into American myth more than full history.
