$100,000 from merchandise sales will go to Sandy Hook families as The Onion on Thursday debuts an Infowars parody on its own site, before it has formally taken control of Alex Jones' platform.
The spoof grew out of The Onion's bid for Infowars assets in bankruptcy court and will mimic Jones' conspiracy-driven style with fake products and shows aimed at stripping the brand of any remaining profit or power.
Jones still has not paid families despite more than $1 billion in court-ordered damages for falsely calling the 2012 school shooting a hoax, claims that fueled years of harassment and death threats.
Infowars once drew 10 million monthly visitors and more than $50 million in annual revenue, but the $1.4 billion defamation judgments shattered the business; The Onion says it is still pursuing the Austin studio and other assets.
