The software change itself makes that clear. In iOS 27, Apple is giving Siri AI the most natural top-edge gesture on iPhone and iPad, pushing Notification Center to the top-left corner. That redesign signals Siri AI is central to the new experience, not an optional extra. But the feature is not broadly available. Base Apple Intelligence and Siri AI support starts with the iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, and newer models. That excludes standard iPhone 15 models and older Pro phones such as the iPhone 14 Pro and 13 Pro, despite their original high prices. Apple’s stated reason is hardware: the new AI stack needs at least the A17 Pro chip and 8GB of memory. Apple is drawing an even sharper line for its best on-device AI features. The most advanced capabilities require 12GB of memory, limiting them to devices such as the iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, and later models. So even some phones that qualify for basic Apple Intelligence will not get the full experience. That makes this both a technical and strategic decision. The hardware demands are real, but Apple is also using AI to differentiate newer devices and encourage upgrades. Users with older iPhones may get iOS 27, but not the platform’s most important new feature.
