At the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV told a delegation from the Ecumenical Patriarchate that all Christian denominations should advance together toward the 2033 second millennium of the Redemption.
The pope said the path to fuller unity should rest on the Nicene Creed, pointing to the 1,700th anniversary commemoration of the First Council of Nicaea as proof of existing communion among Christians.
Leo framed that unity as urgent in a world marked by war, polarization and social division, saying reconciled Christians could offer a credible sign of peace and cooperate on technology, creation and human dignity.
The visit continued the traditional exchange between Rome and Constantinople on the feasts of their patron saints, with Leo also praising Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I for supporting closer ties.
