Q: Will Android 17’s best features be reserved only for the newest, most expensive phones?

No. Many of Android 17’s most useful upgrades are coming to a broad range of eligible phones, but some headline features will work best only on newer, more powerful devices. The widely available features are the practical ones most users will notice day to day. Google says Android 17 is rolling out beyond Pixel to Samsung and other eligible Android phones through 2026. Core additions such as the basic Bubbles floating-window multitasking, Screen Reactions, expanded parental controls, and the new “Mark as Lost” security tool are not described as flagship-only. The parental controls, in particular, are being extended to all devices running Android 17. Where the limits appear is with hardware-specific features. The foldable gaming mode is clearly aimed at foldables, which are still premium devices. The enhanced bubble bar experience is also better suited to large-screen phones and tablets. More importantly, advanced AI features such as Gemini Intelligence are expected only on select high-end devices with strong chips, ample RAM, and long software support. Reports indicate that even some recent premium phones may not qualify. So the answer depends on which features matter most. If you want the core Android 17 improvements in security, family controls, privacy, and general multitasking, you likely will not need the newest expensive phone. If you want the most advanced AI tools or the best foldable-specific gaming features, you probably will.
