Not exactly. Google’s move looks more like a hardware-gated feature rollout than a classic planned obsolescence scheme, though it will still pressure some users to upgrade if they want the new AI. The key fact is that current Pixel Watch 2, 3 and 4 models are still getting Wear OS 7 now, with meaningful improvements: new Wear Widgets, Live Updates, Remote Media Routing, redesigned gestures and up to 10% better battery life. That cuts against the idea that Google is deliberately degrading existing devices. The original Pixel Watch is excluded because its support window ended in 2025. The AI layer, Gemini Intelligence, is different because it depends on hardware these watches do not have. Google says the feature will arrive later in 2026 only on devices with a dedicated neural processing unit. Current Pixel Watches use Qualcomm W5 chips without an NPU, and the company’s rationale is that on-device large language model processing is not practical on those chips at acceptable power levels. Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear Elite, with a Hexagon NPU, is the first clear path to that capability. That means owners of current watches are not losing core functionality, but they are being locked out of the headline AI features for technical reasons tied to newer silicon. Critics can reasonably call that upgrade pressure. Still, based on the available evidence, it is better described as a hardware limitation and product segmentation strategy than deliberate planned obsolescence.
