Milwaukee Brewers players William Contreras and Jackson Chourio will kick off the “United for Venezuela” relief drive on June 29 in Milwaukee, collecting emergency supplies through July 3.
At least 1,400 people were killed and thousands injured after back-to-back earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, with hundreds of international rescuers still searching for survivors.
Contreras, Chourio and coach Nestor Corredor — all Venezuelan — are partnering with Forward Latino and two Catholic parishes to gather food, bottled water, tents, blankets, boots and tools.
The effort also reflects the players’ personal ties to the disaster: both said their families are safe, while Contreras wore a “God bless Venezuela” message during a June 27 game and Chourio dedicated a home run to victims.
