Riichiro Yamada said Virtua Fighter Crossroads is being built as an “open sandbox RPG,” with player decisions reshaping the story rather than following a fixed campaign.
Yamada compared that structure to Detroit: Become Human, saying choices can make it “a whole different game,” while fights still follow Virtua Fighter’s traditional format.
The single-player mode centers on newcomer Cielo but extends to multiple protagonists with distinct tones, plus side quests featuring the legacy cast and more grounded mini-games.
Yamada said some people opposed reviving the dormant series at first, as RGG Studio pushes for a more believable world inspired in part by Watchmen and aims for a 2027 release.
