Summary
Episode 2 opens with Rhaenyra learning Jace has died in the Battle of the Gullet and ends with her on the Iron Throne after Daemon helps take the Red Keep.
Emma D’Arcy said Rhaenyra meets Jace’s death with denial so extreme she tries to speak to his corpse, calling the scene the one moment this season they most dreaded filming.
Otto Hightower’s beheading sharpens the fallout: Rhaenyra personally cuts off his head after Daemon finds him imprisoned, a display D’Arcy said reflects her struggle to project patriarchal power.
Alicent then arrives to find Otto’s body, threatening the fragile understanding she reached with Rhaenyra in Season 2 over removing Aegon from power.
Matt Smith also flagged a new risk at Harrenhal, where Daemon’s refusal to reward Alys Rivers may push her toward Aemond after he takes the castle.
