Summary
292 employees were laid off at Bungie’s Bellevue office, with PlayStation saying cuts hit most of the Destiny 2 team, some Marathon developers and PlayStation staff supporting the studio.
Hermen Hulst said the decision followed months of review of Bungie’s long-term direction, development priorities, resource needs and role inside PlayStation’s portfolio after Destiny 2 underperformed for several years.
Bungie said the layoffs were meant to support current and future operations, while Hulst pointed to a final Destiny 2 update and continued Marathon support as central to the studio’s near-term plans.
Justin Truman is reportedly stepping down as studio head, and the cuts mark Bungie’s third layoff round since Sony acquired the company in 2022.
The move lands weeks after Bungie said Destiny 2 had reached the end of its live-service journey, even as fans push for Destiny 3 and reports say new Destiny projects have been greenlit.
