The pressure is unusually high because Bungie is losing the revenue cushion that sustained it for years. *Destiny 2* support is ending in June 2026, *Destiny 3* is reportedly not in development, and Bloomberg has reported planned layoffs as Bungie winds down its flagship franchise. That leaves *Marathon* as Bungie’s main active commercial bet at a time when Sony has already taken an impairment of about $765 million tied to Bungie’s portfolio and warned of possible further losses. That said, *Marathon* is not a total failure. Reports suggest it has settled into a stable, if modest, player base after launch, and Bungie is committing to years of updates. Reviews and player feedback point to clear strengths—gunplay, atmosphere and lore—but also meaningful weaknesses, including onboarding, UI and a punishing extraction-shooter structure that limits mainstream appeal. In a crowded market, “respectable” may not be enough. For Sony, the key question is not whether *Marathon* can survive, but whether it can scale. To materially repair the acquisition case, it would need sustained player retention, stronger monetization and evidence Bungie can still create a long-running hit. Right now, *Marathon* looks more likely to reduce the damage than to fully rescue the deal.
