Summary
HBO premiered “Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness” on June 26, bringing Larry David back to TV two years after “Curb Your Enthusiasm” ended in 2024.
Jeff Schaffer said the historical sketch comedy grew from an Obama-backed idea for America’s 250th anniversary, with Higher Ground approaching David, an avid American history buff, and the team expanding an initial six-episode plan to seven.
The show keeps the “Curb” formula—outline-based scenes, live rewrites and petty grievances colliding with major events—but shoots them more cinematically, with period sets, costumes and shorts-like sketches rather than a traditional sitcom look.
Barack Obama executive produces and appears in a sketch, while guest stars include Kathryn Hahn, Bill Hader and Jerry Seinfeld in scenarios that recast moments from the Declaration of Independence to Rosa Parks and Lincoln.
Schaffer said the series is billed as limited, but he expects more collaborations with David, saying they are already considering future projects because “people are still irritating.”
