Summary
James Floyd Bennett III, 24, was ordered held without bail Friday after prosecutors accused him of fatally stabbing his 58-year-old father at Phillips Park in Wellesley.
About 20 stab wounds were documented after the attack just after 6 p.m. Thursday, when prosecutors said the two were playing soccer and talking about the World Cup.
A witness heard the victim scream, “He is stabbing me,” and police said the father identified “My son” when asked who attacked him before later dying at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
Prosecutors said Bennett went home after the stabbing, showered, bagged his clothes and the knife, took a photo of himself, and then surrendered to Wellesley police.
Defense lawyer Bill Crowe cited a significant mental health history; Bennett is due back in court July 10 as state and local police continue investigating.
