Summary
Ten new U.S. Mint commemorative coins tied to America’s 250th anniversary are entering circulation, including five special quarters issued this year and five additional designs.
The lineup features images such as the Mayflower, Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, plus a Sacajawea dollar with a redesigned reverse showing a pioneer and a Native American.
The Mint is distributing the coins through the Federal Reserve to banks nationwide, while collectors can also buy a full set for about $100 or premium editions priced as high as $19,000.
Collectors should not expect big returns: dealer Charlie Erthal said many Mint commemoratives later sell for less than their purchase price because of high premiums, making them more sentimental keepsakes than investments.
Some exceptions exist — Erthal said a 2021 Liberty High Relief Gold Coin in perfect Proof 70 grade can fetch about $13,000 — but he framed the anniversary coins mainly as a way to collect U.S. heritage.
