Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport has begun using TSA’s PreCheck Touchless ID system, letting eligible travelers verify identity with a photo instead of showing a physical ID.
The rollout is aimed at cutting wait times during the summer rush; passengers step onto a blue marker, take a photo and can clear the identity check within seconds.
TSA said the system does not require a REAL ID, but travelers must have TSA PreCheck and a passport linked to a participating airline account through their Known Traveler Number.
Travelers without PreCheck or a REAL ID can use Confirm ID, a $45 option valid for 10 days, though TSA said the verification process can take 15 to 30 minutes.
Officials added that forgotten prohibited items such as knives, pepper spray and stun guns can still slow screening, while TSA PreCheck itself costs up to $85 for five years.
