The missing element was not a single named mechanic, but a broader problem: the old Pokémon GO PvP system did not consistently reward player skill. Niantic’s own description of the overhaul says the rebuilt battle system is meant to make battles “consistently reflect player skill” while keeping the game fast and responsive. That strongly suggests the previous system could produce outcomes that felt less tied to decision-making and execution than intended. In practical terms, the update is aimed at making core competitive skills matter more reliably — timing, energy management, shield use, switching decisions, and matchup control — rather than letting the battle system itself blur those differences. The company has not said that one specific “missing skill” was absent; the issue was that the old framework did not consistently translate skill into results. That is also why Niantic created the temporary Competitors Cup for the 2026 World Championships. Top players had already built strategies around the old mechanics, so the company is preserving that ruleset for Worlds while moving the wider GO Battle League to a system designed to better reward skill going forward.
