Summary
$93 single-entry tourist visas will replace roughly $18 fees from July for travelers from more than 100 countries, while multiple-entry visas will rise to $186 from $37.
Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said the increase reflects 48 years without a fee change, plus inflation and exchange-rate shifts.
China, India and Vietnam are among the biggest affected visitor markets, while travelers from the United States and about 70 other countries remain visa-exempt for now.
The move also fits Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s tighter entry controls; visa revenue will help cut Japanese passport fees by about $43, and a Jesta e-system for exempt travelers is planned for 2028.
