South Sudan NEC to Distribute $5 Million for 2026 Election Preparations

$5 million earmarked for South Sudan’s December 2026 elections will be sent this week to all 10 states and three administrative areas, NEC chair Abednego Akok Kachuol said in Juba.
The money is meant to fund grassroots electoral work as preparations accelerate, but Kachuol said credible polls still depend on political will, legal backing and a steady flow of additional funding.
The commission is also preparing to publish the official electoral timetable — a legal step due at least six months before polling day — and has already decided to use 2010 constituency boundaries after census delays.
The vote would be South Sudan’s first national election since independence in 2011, though civil society groups have continued to question security conditions and overall readiness despite President Salva Kiir’s pledge to hold it in December 2026.
