A group of tax experts and former IRS officials told a federal judge in Miami that the Justice Department illegally agreed to shield Donald Trump, his family and his businesses from audits and other federal probes tied to past filings.
The filing argues that immunity is part of a broader settlement of Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS over the leak of his private tax data.
The challengers said the arrangement violates the Constitution’s bar on presidents receiving compensation beyond their salary, turning the settlement into a constitutional dispute as well as a tax case.
