Summary
One Montreal police officer and one civilian were killed Monday, and the gunman was shot dead, after violence erupted around 11:30 a.m. ET in Côte-des-Neiges.
Another officer was seriously wounded, but Police Chief Fady Dagher said the suspect was "shot right away" and there was no ongoing threat to the community.
Police have not identified the civilian, confirmed who killed that person, or established a motive in the area of kosher restaurants, supermarkets and homes frequented by Montreal's Jewish community.
The killing marked Montreal police's first line-of-duty officer death since 2002, as Jewish community leaders urged vigilance and Quebec officials warned against speculation while the investigation continues.
