China accelerated the Shenzhou-23 window upgrade because a suspected space-debris strike on Shenzhou-20 exposed a direct crew-safety risk during reentry. According to the additional reporting, the suspected impact damaged a return-capsule viewport on Shenzhou-20 badly enough that it was considered unfit for bringing astronauts home. That incident forced the crew to stay in orbit longer, led to China’s first emergency launch response in its crewed program, and required mission reshuffling so the affected astronauts could return on a different spacecraft. The episode underscored how even a small debris hit can disrupt an entire mission and endanger astronauts. In response, engineers moved forward a window redesign that had originally been planned for Shenzhou-24 and installed it on Shenzhou-23 instead. The upgrade changed the viewport from a single anti-ablation glass layer to a triple-protection structure with two anti-ablation layers plus an interior protective layer, improving resistance to debris impacts. The urgency was also practical. Shenzhou-23 is scheduled for a year-long mission, increasing exposure time in orbit, and it will support a heavy scientific workload and future international cooperation. With those stakes, Chinese engineers chose not to wait for the next spacecraft generation and carried out the modification on an already assembled vehicle at the launch site to reduce the chance of another debris-related emergency.

New Tiangong footage showed Hong Kong’s first astronaut Lai Ka-ying and the Shenzhou-23 crew celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival with rice dumplings and greetings to Earth.
The video also captured their first in-orbit medical rescue drill, with Lai helping fit rescue equipment and taking routine cabin temperature measurements.
Commander Zhu Yangzhu, pilot Zhang Zhiyuan and Lai were also seen conducting space science experiments and physical exercise during the holiday period.
Launched on May 24, Shenzhou-23 is scheduled to carry out more than 100 scientific and applied projects in life sciences, materials science, fluid physics and medicine during a yearlong mission.
