Summary
Jason Doherty, 60, of Newberg was identified as the motorcyclist killed Friday evening after crashing on southbound Interstate 5 in southwest Portland.
Police said Doherty was riding a 2002 Harley-Davidson with a sidecar shortly before 6:30 p.m. when, after taking a left turn off the Marquam Bridge, the motorcycle swerved out of its lane and hit a concrete barrier.
A Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crew passing by stopped to provide lifesaving care, but Doherty died at the scene; investigators said they still have not determined why he or the bike swerved.
Police said Doherty was wearing a half-shell novelty helmet not approved by the Department of Transportation, and the crash shut I-5 South at the bridge for most of Friday evening.
The death was Portland's 20th traffic fatality of 2026 and the eighth involving a motorcycle or gas-powered scooter; police are seeking witnesses under case 26-178327.
