Summary
Select Weis Markets stores in Pennsylvania are rolling out Instacart’s Caper Carts, which use cameras, weight scales, touchscreens and location tracking to identify items as shoppers move through aisles.
Instacart says the carts push real-time ads, eCoupons and prompts tied to a shopper’s location and purchases, and early tests lifted average basket size by nearly 1 percentage point.
The system also promotes Weis Rewards sign-ups and a “Buy It Again” feature, while Instacart says its Physical AI is trained on more than 1.6 billion online grocery orders.
Instacart said Caper Cart deployments have tripled from prior years, underscoring a broader push to bring AI-driven retail tools into U.S. grocery stores.
