Summary
$100,000 bail was set for each of three Michigan men accused of kidnapping and beating New York resident Naved Azim in an MGM Grand hotel room, then extorting his family over alleged gambling debts.
Police say Issa Hamade, Ahmad Harb and Sobhi Sobh lured Azim to the room, beat and strangled him, stuffed him in a closet, and showed his injured condition to his father on a video call while demanding $185,000.
Investigators said the dispute grew from fake sports bets: Azim allegedly admitted he fabricated a DraftKings ticket for a $2,300 Knicks wager that Harb believed had paid out $20,000, then kept taking bets he never placed.
Harb later told investigators the debt was actually $325,000, while defense lawyers argued Azim was involved in a fraudulent gambling scheme and disputed their clients' roles beyond being in the hotel room.
The FBI and Las Vegas police are also investigating an apparent Thursday attack in nearby Boulder City, as the Las Vegas case widens beyond the initial hotel-room allegations.
