Summary
Denver will host “Smithsonian Starstruck” from Aug. 13, with tickets going on sale June 18 at $21.75 to $24.75 for the 1-hour immersive VR show.
The exhibition uses real astronomical data from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, NASA and the European Space Agency to place visitors inside exploding stars, black holes and atop observatories including the James Webb Space Telescope.
Denver was chosen as one of the first five cities because of its aerospace ties, including Ball Aerospace’s 21-foot Webb mirror and Lockheed Martin’s work on the telescope’s primary camera.
Groups of 6 enter every 3 minutes, giving the show capacity for about 100 people an hour; Smithsonian Enterprises says it is the institution’s first VR exhibition and a significant investment.
After opening in Washington on June 12, the Fever-produced show is also rolling out to cities including San Antonio, Orlando, London and Manchester, with an eventual goal of 30 cities.
