Summary
Unreal Engine 5.8 adds Lumen Lite, which Epic says runs twice as fast as the previous Lumen version and lets Nintendo Switch 2 games using global illumination hit 60 fps.
Lumen is UE5’s default real-time lighting and reflections system; the new Lite mode cuts GPU cost while preserving much of the visual effect, making the feature viable on Nintendo’s new console.
Simon Tourangeau, Epic’s engineering VP, said the work is also feeding further Nanite optimization for Switch 2, extending performance gains beyond lighting alone.
Fortnite and a handful of other UE5 titles are already on Switch 2, and the update could make ports of more demanding Unreal games more practical.
