PIX11 put a simple World Cup question to New York’s 13th District candidates, and Rep. Adriano Espaillat said he was rooting for Mexico while challenger Darializa Chevalier picked Senegal instead of Team USA.
The exchange landed in the middle of their Democratic fight for a congressional seat that pays $174,000 a year, turning a light TV segment into a campaign flashpoint.
Chevalier, backed by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, drew added scrutiny because of past social media posts attacking the U.S. and endorsing borderless and anti-police politics.
Espaillat, seeking a sixth term, and Chevalier will now carry the episode into a race where identity, loyalty and symbolism can spill beyond sports into November politics.
