1.5 million Defense Department workers now use GenAI.mil each day, up from fewer than 100,000 six months ago and 80,000 when the platform launched in December 2025.
Google's Gemini rollout on unclassified networks, clearer Pentagon guidance and leadership pressure to use approved AI tools drove the jump, the department's chief technology officer said.
DoD staff are using the system for routine paperwork and drafting tasks, including reports to Congress that officials say can be cut from about 200 hours to five.
The surge fits a broader Pentagon push to embed AI across office work and combat support, with officials seeking billions for next-generation AI and computing in the fiscal 2027 budget.
