Summary
Vance said Monday the new U.S.-Iran agreement does not grant Tehran “billions of dollars of assets,” rejecting a reported $24 billion figure ahead of a signing expected later this week.
The denial came after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said the deal would let Iran access $24 billion in frozen funds during a 60-day final negotiation period, with half available before final talks begin.
Vance said the administration is willing to discuss unfreezing assets but described the bigger incentive as lifting broader economic sanctions if Iran accepts long-term nuclear limits and real inspections.
Full terms have not yet been released, but Vance said the text will be published this week and that technical talks starting Friday will cover destroying Iran’s enriched stockpile with U.N. watchdog involvement.
He said the deal is meant to block Iran from ever obtaining a nuclear weapon and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, adding that U.S. forces could help verify compliance if needed.
