More than 40 studies presented at ASCO linked GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy to lower cancer risk, with some findings showing reductions of up to 50% in specific tumors.
110,000 women ages 45 to 80 in one study were 30% less likely to develop breast cancer while taking GLP-1s, and researchers said weight loss alone did not fully explain the effect.
10,000 early-stage cancer patients in another study saw lower risk in six of seven cancer types—especially colorectal, breast, liver and lung—with lung cancer showing a 50% reduction despite no known obesity link.
A separate 10,000-patient analysis found GLP-1 users were less likely to progress to worse stages across four solid tumors, supporting theories that the drugs' anti-inflammatory effects may help suppress cancer.
All of the evidence is observational, so researchers say randomized trials are still needed before GLP-1s can be prescribed as cancer-fighting treatments.
