Summary
Three blocks of homes in Compton were evacuated for about four hours after a resident reported finding a WWII-style hand grenade inside a Nickerson Gardens home around 3 p.m. Saturday.
Los Angeles County sheriff's Arson and Explosives detectives later collected the device and cleared the area, and Sgt. D. Watson said it was determined to be inert.
Lt. B. Payes said authorities did not know how the military ordnance ended up in the home, though deputies said old grenades—real or fake—must be treated as dangerous and removed.
The incident rattled neighbors and came two days after another Compton-area evacuation, when a possible explosive device found in a home's attic was also determined to be non-explosive.
