Summary
Taormina hosted the world premiere of Crowe’s new thriller “Bear Country” on Saturday, as the actor also received the festival’s International Achievement Award.
Speaking at the Sicilian festival, Crowe said “Gladiator II” failed because it abandoned the original film’s “moral core,” arguing that Maximus’s story could not include studio-pushed sex scenes without undermining his grief-driven arc.
Crowe said the sequel “barely took the same box office” as 2000’s “Gladiator” despite 20 years of inflation, and argued the first film drew women as well as men because it was rooted in love and loss, not simple revenge.
He also defended theatrical moviegoing even as he described strong Netflix performance for his catalog, saying his Netflix film “Unabomber” is due in September or October.
Crowe added that he has finished shooting Amazon’s “Highlander” reboot with Henry Cavill and warned that political leaders can use charisma to mask “bad things.”
