CEPI Awards PHV $1.9 Million for Bundibugyo Ebola Vaccine as Outbreak Tops 560 Cases

Summary
$1.9 million from CEPI will fund Public Health Vaccines to produce master viral seed stock, a key step needed to move its Bundibugyo ebolavirus vaccine candidate toward clinical testing.
The award responds to an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda that has been declared a continental and global health emergency, with more than 560 confirmed cases and over 100 deaths.
PHV’s candidate uses the rVSV platform already employed in a licensed Zaire ebolavirus vaccine, but no Bundibugyo vaccine is licensed or currently in clinical development.
This is CEPI’s fourth Bundibugyo vaccine investment, part of a broader push that also includes lab, trial, manufacturing and regulatory support and could later extend to clinical trials, emergency authorization and affordable supply.
With four competing vaccines now funded, how will a winner be chosen before this epidemic spirals further?

Bundibugyo Ebola Outbreak 2026: Scale, Spread, and the Global Race for a Vaccine Amid Systemic Failures
Overview
The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in June 2026 remains a major public health crisis, mainly spreading through direct contact with infected bodily fluids and contaminated surfaces, rather than through the air. Handling victims' bodies is especially risky, making strict safety protocols during funerals essential. Because Ebola does not usually spread far from its origin, the risk to regions like the EU/EEA is very low. However, the lack of approved vaccines or treatments means that controlling the outbreak depends on strong public health measures, early isolation, and community engagement to prevent further spread and protect vulnerable populations.
