  • WHO said the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak has reached 900 cases and 220 suspected deaths, with cross-border spread to Uganda after the virus circulated undetected for six weeks.
  • Only 7% of 1,261 identified contacts had been reached as of last week, internal WHO-Africa CDC documents showed, leaving thousands of potentially exposed people untraced.
  • No vaccine or treatment exists for the Bundibugyo strain, and shortages of the right diagnostic tests in Congo delayed detection and are complicating containment.
  • Attacks on hospitals in eastern Congo, including burned isolation tents and families reclaiming bodies, have disrupted case tracking in a conflict-hit region already facing mistrust and weak health infrastructure.
  • U.S. withdrawal from WHO and wider donor funding cuts have thinned emergency teams, pushing responders back to pre-vaccine Ebola tactics and raising fears of a larger regional crisis.

Overview

In late May 2026, the Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus rapidly intensified in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, creating a severe public health crisis. Uganda also reported confirmed cases linked to cross-border travel. The crisis was made worse by ongoing violence, attacks on health centers, and poor infrastructure, which severely limited containment efforts and highlighted the urgent need for stronger health systems and international support.
