A June 9 escort flight from Madrid to Barcelona turned personal when Pope Leo XIV spoke by radio to Spanish Air Force pilot Juan Enrique, telling him it was "a pleasure and a blessing" to meet him.
The exchange came after the pope entered the Iberia cockpit, saw photos of the fighter pilot and learned he was both a father and a Catholic escorting the papal plane across Spain.
Juan Enrique flew alongside the aircraft carrying Leo XIV, photographed the papal plane from his jet and received the pope's thanks: "Thank you for everything. It is a great honor."
