Apple says the new system can find results based on meaning, not only exact keywords. The main cutoff is iOS 27 support. Current reporting indicates iOS 27 will run on iPhone 11 models and later, including the second-generation iPhone SE and newer. If you have an iPhone XR, XS, or older, your device is expected to be left behind because it will not support iOS 27. There is, however, an important distinction between the basic search overhaul and Apple Intelligence features. The broader Mail search improvements appear set to reach all iPhones that can run iOS 27. But the more advanced AI-powered extras tied to Apple Intelligence—such as smarter writing suggestions, personalized Smart Reply, and deeper Siri-driven assistance—will require newer hardware, generally iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 models and later. So the short answer is that most users with relatively recent iPhones will get the better Mail search. Only owners of pre-iPhone 11 devices, or those expecting the full Apple Intelligence experience on older supported phones, are likely to miss out.
