Summary
Tchomia, about 50 km south of Bunia on Lake Albert, became the latest affected health zone, extending Congo’s Ebola outbreak to 26 zones nationwide and 18 in Ituri.
Thirty-seven new confirmed cases and 12 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, all in Ituri, underscoring sustained transmission more than three weeks after the epidemic was declared.
Ituri now accounts for more than 94% of confirmed infections, while the national toll has reached 635 cases and 127 deaths across Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu.
Eight patients were newly declared recovered, lifting recoveries to 30, as treatment activities expanded at Ebola centres in Bunia and Rwampara.
The May 15 outbreak is driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain, which has no approved vaccine or specific treatment, complicating containment in insecure, displaced border regions.
