Wednesday’s planned Knicks watch party outside Madison Square Garden was scrapped just before 5 p.m., though team-backed events at Wollman Rink and Brooklyn Bowl will still go ahead.
MSG said the Knicks rejected the city and NYPD plan for a 999-person ticketed event, accusing officials of turning the area into a "police state" with heavy restrictions on fan access.
Game 4 security will seal off the area from West 29th to West 35th streets between Sixth and Eighth avenues, with screening checkpoints and entry limited to ticket holders, residents, workers and other authorized visitors.
The clampdown follows Monday night unrest after the Knicks' loss, when crowds spilled from Bryant Park onto nearby streets and fights led to 21 arrests.
The dispute revives tensions over Finals crowds after the NYPD had opposed outdoor watch parties during the conference finals before the city reversed course when New York reached its first NBA Finals since 1999.
