Ghost Veil Deck Wins 3 of 30 Tournaments as New Cards Challenge Dragapult

Q: Can the Ghost Veil archetype withstand decks that rely on pure damage output instead of special effects?

Not reliably on Ghost Veil alone. The archetype’s main strength is that Ghost Veil blocks effects of attacks and abilities, which makes it excellent into Dragapult-style spread damage and utility-based disruption. That is why it looks promising against decks built around Phantom Dive and ability-driven pressure from cards such as Dusknoir, Munkidori, Froslass, Mega Greninja, and Alakazam. That protection does not appear to stop straightforward attack damage to the Active Pokémon. So if an opposing deck wins by simply swinging for high numbers, Ghost Veil’s signature defense is much less relevant. In those matchups, the deck has to survive through normal means rather than through immunity to effects. The available card pool suggests Ghost Veil can still compete, but by racing or trading efficiently rather than by hard-countering raw damage. Dhelmise can reach 170 damage, Lillie’s Clefairy ex can one-shot Dragapult, and the Sinistcha-Spiritomb package gives the deck a way to pressure multiple targets and finish larger ex Pokémon. As a single-prize strategy, it may also gain value through favorable prize trades. The early Japanese results support a measured view. Winning three of 30 Gym Battle events is a strong early signal, but Dragapult still led with seven wins. That suggests Ghost Veil is a credible contender, not an all-purpose shield. Against pure damage decks, its success will likely depend on speed, prize efficiency, and matchup tuning more than on Ghost Veil itself.

Three of 30 Japanese Gym Battle events on June 3 were won by the new Ghost Veil deck, an early sign the archetype can compete before Pitch Black launches globally in July.
Ghost Veil blocks effects from both attacks and abilities, shutting off Dragapult’s Phantom Dive bench pressure and blunting other meta threats including Dusknoir, Munkidori, Froslass, Mega Greninja and Alakazam.
Dhelmise gives the deck an early 170-damage attacker, while Sinistcha spreads damage counters across the board and Spiritomb can convert that pressure into knockouts on bulkier ex targets; Lillie’s Clefairy ex offers a Dragapult one-shot option.
Dragapult still led the same roundup with seven tournament wins, but the results suggest a viable new single-prize counter deck may be emerging in Japan ahead of the worldwide release.
