Guildford Jury Acquits Driver in 2022 Crash That Killed 69-Year-Old Susan Barras

A Guildford court found the driver accused of killing Susan Barras not guilty of careless driving after hearing he said low winter sun prevented him from seeing her.
CCTV shown at the February trial captured moments before the late-November 2022 collision; witnesses said Barras shouted "stop" before she was struck and her head hit the road.
Barras died 12 hours later in hospital from internal bleeding, according to the account in the latest report.
The case emerged as part the author's account of discovering in 2023 that her estranged birth mother had died, then piecing together a life marked by family estrangement, illness and adoption trauma.
