Boston sent Brayan Bello to Triple-A Worcester after he was shelled again by Baltimore, a move that followed another ugly home loss and his postgame clash with reporters.
Five first-inning runs Thursday underscored the problem: Bello has struggled badly as a traditional starter, with a 9.68 ERA in seven starts compared with a 0.71 ERA in four bulk-relief appearances.
His season line has fallen to 2-6 with a 6.34 ERA, while opponents are batting .310 against him — both among the worst marks for qualified MLB starters.
The demotion comes as Boston reshuffles its staff despite starting pitching being one of the few relative strengths on a disappointing season; earlier reports said Joe La Sorsa would take Bello's roster spot.
