Boston said Trevor Story underwent successful sports hernia surgery Friday in Philadelphia, leaving the shortstop likely sidelined for several weeks and possibly up to 10.
Story went on the 10-day injured list after missing the Atlanta series opener, ending a stretch in which he played 41 of Boston's first 43 games despite ongoing discomfort.
The 33-year-old was struggling before the procedure, batting .206 with 3 homers, a .547 OPS that ranked 165th of 173 qualified hitters, and 6 errors.
Andruw Monasterio and Isiah Kiner-Falefa have split recent starts at shortstop, while Boston may also shift Marcelo Mayer there as the absence stretches on.
Story joins Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet on the injured list for a Red Sox club that enters its Minnesota series fourth in the AL East.
