Euro Area Retail Sales Fall 0.4% in April as EU Volume Drops 0.5%

Summary
April retail trade volume fell 0.4% in the euro area and 0.5% across the EU from March, reversing revised gains of 0.8% and 1.1% a month earlier.
Non-food sales drove the pullback, dropping 0.9% in the euro area and 1.2% in the EU, while automotive fuel slid 2.7% and 2.4%; food, drinks and tobacco still rose 0.9% and 0.5%.
Denmark posted the steepest monthly decline at 4.5%, followed by Romania at 2.6% and Belgium and Slovakia at 1.8%, while Lithuania rose 1.9% and France edged up 0.3%.
Compared with April 2025, retail volumes still increased 1.0% in the euro area and 0.9% in the EU, with Lithuania up 8.9% and Romania down 5.7%.
