Summary
WalletHub placed Massachusetts first among the 50 states and Washington, D.C., giving it a 69.37 score in a new economy ranking released Monday.
The ranking drew on 28 indicators across economic activity, economic health and innovation potential, using data from sources including the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Massachusetts stood out for research investment, the second-most patents per capita, the highest share of high-tech jobs, the third-highest share of STEM professionals and the most firms on Deloitte's Technology Fast 500.
Washington ranked second and Utah third, while other New England states trailed Massachusetts: New Hampshire was 13th, Connecticut 16th, Vermont 29th, Rhode Island 47th and Maine 48th.
WalletHub said strong state economies can make household financial success more attainable, though Massachusetts' top finish still reflected a score well below a perfect 100.
