Summary
Flight 3345 from San Juan to Chicago diverted to Miami late Sunday after Juan Gabriel Reyes, 51, allegedly choked an off-duty flight attendant during a midair disturbance.
About 45 minutes after takeoff, Reyes allegedly tried to open an emergency exit, shoved at the cockpit door and said he wanted to get off the plane, according to police and federal court documents.
Passengers and crew restrained him with flex cuffs and seatbelt extenders after he repeatedly broke free; Miami-Dade deputies took him into custody and the FBI questioned him.
Reyes now faces federal charges of interfering with flight crew members and attendants and assault, while Frontier said the aircraft continued to Chicago a few hours later.
The FAA said it has logged 687 unruly-passenger reports this year, and another flight diverted Friday after a passenger allegedly tried multiple times to breach a cockpit.
